The #FairKitchens movement was founded by Unilever Food Solutions in the summer of 2018 in response to a heightened need to address health and well-being issues at the heart of the foodservice and hospitality industry. Research by Unilever Food Solutions in 2017 had uncovered that 74% of chefs were sleep deprived to the point of exhaustion, 63% of chefs felt depressed, and more than half felt pushed to breaking point.
This inclusive industry-wide and global movement aims to better the lives of foodservice professionals around the world. #FairKitchens connects and creates community in the industry to open a conversation around the unhealthy working conditions and call for change, because a healthier kitchen culture makes for a healthier business. The movement aims to raise the standards of the foodservice and hospitality industry to better retain today’s talent and attract the talent needed for the future.
#FairKitchens goes beyond awareness to provide tangible solutions that will make a difference. These solutions take the form of sharing success and challenges from operators around the world who lead Fair Kitchens, plus resources, training and tools from our partners. Some of these resources include a TEAMS code – a set of principles that is the starting point of our movements, a Health and Well-Being Check-In document and Online Leadership Training.
#FairKitchens is open to anyone who wants to make change. It shines a light on the people doing it right, telling their story to show that the vision for #FairKitchens is not only realistic but achievable and successful, and never points a finger at those getting it wrong.
